On November 26, 2022, the 5th  "Career in Shanghai" -the Sino-European Innovation and Professional Development Forum  2022 and the 3rd Sino-Australia Innovation and Professional Development Forum  2022, organized by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality(Shanghai Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs) and hosted by of the Germany and Australia Liaison Offices  of Shanghai International Academic Exchange Association  were held in 12 cities around the world, including Sydney, Wollongong, Brisbane, Townsville, Hobart in Australia, Auckland in New Zealand, Karlsruhe and Hanover in Germany, Amsterdam and Leiden in the Netherlands, and Zurich in Switzerland. Xu Feng, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, attended the event in Shanghai and delivered a speech. Cao Yuanfeng, Deputy Minister of the Organization Department of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Talent Office, Huang Hong, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality(Shanghai Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs) , and Fu Guoqing, Secretary-General of the Shanghai International Acedemic Exchange Association, also attended the forum and jointly released the bilingual version (Chinese-English) of the “Expat Guide：Work and Live in Shanghai.”

In his speech, Xu Feng expressed that Shanghai will continue to welcome and support outstanding talents from around the world to develop a career in Shanghai, and strive to create a home for every innovator and entrepreneur to pursue their dreams. Shanghai will further optimize the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, enhance the openness, flexibility, and ease of talent policies, allowing every overseas talent coming to Shanghai to fully experience the charm of this cosmopolitan city while integrating into the international talent development environment of Shanghai. Shanghai aims to provide a sense of belonging for all types of talents, making them feel that “where the heart is at peace, there is my home.”

The 2022 "Career in Shanghai" -the Sino-European and  Sino-AustraliaInnovation and Professional Development Forum  2022, with the theme of “Talent Gathering, International Cooperation, and Collaborative Innovation,” focused on exploring models of industry-research collaboration, opportunities and challenges in career development, and the development potential of top research institutions. Participants at the forum discussed their visions for career development and explored opportunities for international exchanges and cooperation.

During the forum, Professor Dou Shixue, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Engineering and Director of the Energy Materials Science Research Institute at Shanghai University of Technology, delivered a keynote speech on “Implementing the Strategy of Promoting Science and Education to Strengthen Talent Support for Modernization Construction.”   Dr. Zhang Chengqi, Vice President of the University of Technology Sydney and Chair of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in 2024, presented a keynote speech on “Reflections on Industry-Research Collaboration.”   Professor Michael Ott, Lifetime Professor of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School, and Director of the Hannover Regeneration Research Center and Twincore Infection Research Center, gave a keynote speech on “Trends and Development of Medicine 4.0 in the 21st Century.”   Professor Ding Fei, Lifetime Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Leibniz University Hannover, delivered a keynote speech on “Applying for Research Funding in Germany: The First Million Euro Goal for Young Scientists.”   Siegmar Haasis, former Chief Information Officer of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development Center and former Chief Information Officer of Mercedes-Benz China, presented a keynote speech on “Value-Driven Digital Transformation of the Automotive Industry.”  These keynote speeches received high praise from participating organizations and overseas talents.

The forum adopted a combination of online and offline formats, providing a platform for overseas talents to fully understand Shanghai’s business environment, innovation and entrepreneurship policies, and career development opportunities. During the event, it attracted more than 700 overseas talents, and received over 1,000 resumes from overseas talents.

The newly released “Expat Guide：Work and Live in Shanghai” covers policy interpretations and information on visas, employment, healthcare, housing, finance, and other aspects that are of common concern to foreign nationals. It provides a convenient service guide for shopping, tourism, and communication services, truly achieving the goal of “having one handbook in hand, with no worries about accommodation and transportation.” It helps foreign nationals to live and enjoy their lives in Shanghai, and hopefully develop an affection for the city and choose to stay. In the future, the handbook will also be released in Japanese and Korean versions, and will continue to be upgraded and optimized.

Embarking on a new journey together in innovation and entrepreneurship

Over the past five years, the “Career in Shanghai” Forum has showcased a strong brand effect in attracting overseas talents. It has successfully attracted the Dean of the Swiss Academy of Engineering and a team of experts in optoelectronics, leading to the establishment of the Sino-Swiss Advanced Technology Research Institute. It has also attracted leading talents and teams in the fields of cancer biomarkers and virus diagnostics, as well as entrepreneurs in the radar and autonomous driving fields. Additionally, it has attracted expert talents involved in the completion of the world’s first preclinical study on liver fibrosis mRNA protein replacement.
